Gert und Uwe Tobias artworks and editions
Twin brothers Gert and Uwe Tobias have been working together as an artist duo since the late 1990s. They are among the best-known German print artists. Today they live and work in Cologne. The brothers were born in Romania in 1973 and moved to Germany in the mid-1980s. From 1998 to 2002 they studied at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig.
The artist duo creates in collaborative artistic exchange relief and ceramic sculptures, drawings, watercolors and so-called "Schreibmaschinenzeichnungen" (typewriter drawings), that is, images that they compose from letters written with a typewriter. However, the artists have become best known for their large-format color woodcuts, which form the center of their works and in which they use a puzzle-like technique to create effective print gaps and overlaps.
In her lively expressive artworks and editions, different stimuli, as well as figuration and abstraction meet. Thus, in addition to folkloric elements of their homeland Transylvania, inspirations from art history, images and objects of subculture, or everyday life can be found in their works.
The artist brothers have received several awards for their work. Their artworks and editions have been presented in numerous international solo exhibitions.
