Biography
Walter Stöhrer was born in Stuttgart on January 15, 1937. His childhood was marked by the consequences of the Second World War. His family moved several times until they finally found their permanent home in Karlsruhe. There, after his school career, Stöhrer began an apprenticeship as a commercial artist with the company Werbe-Blum in 1952. He completed this as a journeyman in 1954.
Two years later, Stöhrer was accepted at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe. At first, he again devoted himself to commercial art in the class of Hans Gaensslen. After a year, however, he turned away from this field for the time being and switched to the class of HAP Griesbacher, who taught free painting. Together with his fellow students, who included artists such as Horst Antes, Hans Baschang, and Fritz Genkinger, he opposed the style of abstraction that prevailed in the 1950s. With his figurative works of this period, Stöhrer was one of the pioneers of the so-called New Figuration.
In 1959 he broke off his studies early and moved to Berlin. In the following years he was inspired by the works of well-known contemporaries, such as Jackson Pollock and Pierre Alechinsky, as well as by art styles, such as Surrealism and Art Brut. Accordingly, his work cannot be clearly categorized into one style. His works are an interplay of writings, abstraction and figuration, drawing and painting.
As early as 1961, Stöhrer's distinctive works were presented to the public in a first solo exhibition in the cellar gallery of the castle in Darmstadt. One year later followed his first award with the German Youth Art Prize in Stuttgart. As a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund, Stöhrer participated in their annual exhibitions in 1964 and 1971. In the years that followed, his works were honored with numerous other awards and shown in numerous national as well as international exhibitions. The Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf and the Saarland-Museum in Saarbrücken dedicated two retrospectives to his works as early as 1984.
In the 1980s he began teaching at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. Thus, in 1981 he was appointed as a visiting professor for one year and finally received a full professorship in 1986. In the meantime, he became a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1984. During the time off from his studies he lived in Scholderup near Schleswig.
In November 1999, five months before his death, Stöhrer and Hanne Forstbauer founded the Walter Stöhrer Foundation, which is located in Scholderup and functions as an archive and collection. On April 10, 2000, the artist and graphic designer died in the same place.
