Biography
Stefan Josef Oskar Wewerka was born in Magdeburg in 1928 as the son of the sculptor Rudolf Wewerka. He grew up in a traditional family of artists, which can be traced back to several generations. He first devoted himself to studying architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin from 1946 to 1950 and was a student of Eduard Ludwig, Georg Leowald and Max Taut. As early as 1951, the young man was able to realize his first major project: The construction of the Federal Youth Hostel Bonn-Venusberg.
Wewerka lived in Cologne in 1954 and in Berlin from 1963 to 1967. There he worked for about three years in the architectural office of Hans Scharoun. Increasingly, however, his work intensified in the field of free art. From the beginning of the 1960s he realized his first "Zerschneidungen". During this time he traveled through Europe and the USA, where he made new contacts. In addition, he converted everyday objects such as furniture, cutlery or records. In the 1970s he also realized numerous single sheets, etchings or entire portfolio works.
From 1977 to 1993 Stefan Wewerka held a professorship for basic principles in the department of art and design at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences. During this time his cooperation with TECTA took place. He designed innovative and playful fashion, furniture and chair sculptures for the furniture company. The B1 three-legged chair is considered his best-known work.
Wewerka passed away on September 14, 2013 in Berlin. In the summer of 2014, Forum Gestaltung e.V., the city of Magdeburg and Wewerka's son founded the "Wewerka Archive", which includes the estates of Hans Wewerka, Rudolf Wewerka, Stefan Wewerka and the estate of Philipp Wewerka.
