Basic Data

Siegfried Anzinger is a contemporary painter, draftsman and sculptor from Austria, who has also taught at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf since 1997. While his painterly signature in its gestures and expressiveness initially seems to be closely linked to the "Junge Wilde", Anzinger finds his way to an unmistakably light and playful pictorial language, in which the painter consciously turns away from the weight of meaning of his motifs.

Biography

The Austrian artist Siegfried Anzinger was born in 1953 in Weyer an der Enns in Austria. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Professor Melcher from 1971 to 1977.

In the 1980s Anzinger founded the group of "Junge Wilde" (Young Wild Ones), with whom he was largely responsible for the awakening of the Austrian art scene. So while his painting style can initially be described as gestural and expressive and he places his figures on smeared surfaces, he finally finds his individual handwriting in his artistic works, which appears "non-finito", i.e. unfinished, and at the same time has a certain playful lightness and spontaneity. He paints gently drawn figures and scenic impressions that express a certain calmness. In addition, the artist has been painting for some years with the transparent glue paint, which, once applied, can no longer be corrected and has thus led him to a great painterly and compositional certainty. If the painter still does not like a work, he starts again.

Since the 2000s, it is pictorial subjects such as animals, erotic depictions but also biblical motifs such as creation stories or Madonnas that are repeatedly found as motifs in his artworks and editions. However, he disregards symbolic and representative aspects and mixes humour with absurdity and irony with provocation. In recent times, it is colour stimuli and line remnants from which Anzinger creates new forms and figurations.

Anzinger has lived in Cologne since 1997 and holds a professorship at the renowned Düsseldorf Art Academy. Since 2003, the painter has also been elected to the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

The painter can look back on numerous national and international exhibitions. He took part in documenta 7 and the Venice Biennale and also won the Oskar Kokoschka Prize in 1985. Most recently, he was honoured with the Grand Austrian State Prize in 2006. The painter currently lives and works in Cologne.
