Biography
Markus Oehlen was born in Krefeld, Germany, in 1956. He studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1978 to 1984. In the 1980s, he was part of the "Junge Wilden" movement along with artists such as Albert Oehlen (his brother), Martin Kippenberger and Werner Büttner.
In the 1980s, Oehlen's works were characterized by raw painting and a wild, often chaotic aesthetic that challenged the formal and textual conventions of art. He experimented with a variety of materials and techniques, often incorporating collage and other media into his paintings. In addition, he was also active as a musician and played in various bands, which is also reflected in his works. Later, Oehlen developed his style further and has increasingly worked with digital art and photography. Nevertheless, his approach often remains experimental and transgressive.
Markus Oehlen's works have been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Europe and beyond. Today, the artist lives and works in Munich.
