Basic data

The brothers Jake and Dinos Chapman are two contemporary British artists. As a polarizing artist duo, they advanced in the 1990s to become the entfants terribles of the art scene and are among the most important representatives of the 'Young British Artists'. In their sculptures, prints, and installations, the brothers often move on the edge of breaking taboos and deal with contemporary politics, religion, and moral concepts with subversive wit and a great deal of black humor.

Biography

Jake Chapman was born in Cheltenham in 1966 and his brother Dinos a year later in London. The two brothers studied at North East London Polytechnic and later at the prestigious Royal College of Art in London. After graduating, they began working together as an artist duo in the 1990s and quickly gained recognition in the British art scene as "Young British Artists".

Known for their often provocative and controversial works, the "Chapman Brothers" have earned a reputation as enfant terribles in contemporary art. The Brothers' art challenges the viewer and encourages reflection on deep and often uncomfortable issues. Much of their work deals with depictions of violence, cruelty and human suffering, often on a hyperbolic and exaggerated scale. Britons use both their technical skills and their sharp social and cultural critique to create meaningful and often controversial works of art.

Despite - or perhaps because of - their controversial subject matter, the Chapman Brothers have received numerous awards and recognitions and are now a fixture in the international art world.
