Biography
Hermann Josef Kuhna was born on December 31, 1944 in Weißensee-Ottenhausen in Thuringia. The young Kuhna first studied at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf from 1964 to 1969 under the artists Karl Bobek, Kurt Arnscheidt and Gert Weber. From 1972 he worked as a lecturer at the Institute for Art Education at the Academy. Since the late 1970s, he taught as a professor at the now independent art academy in Münster. Until his retirement, Kuhna trained a large number of artists. Among his master students were Dorothea Schüle, Eva Hollmann and Hugo Boguslawski.
Since the 1980s, the painter worked from his Düsseldorf studio. In 1997, his monumental mural entitled "Rivertime" was ceremoniously inaugurated at Burgplatz in the lower Rhine wharf. With this, the artist remains present in the city of Düsseldorf even after his death in 2018.
While his early works are characterized by representational painting, since the 1970s he has intensively explored the effect of color in his artistic works. His art exhibits a high degree of abstraction, which, as it were, invites the viewer to fill it with content. His pictorial language, comparable to a mosaic, is composed of a shimmering tangle of small-scale color blobs and dots.
