Anne Neukamp‘s visual language is based on functional symbols of her environment. In her work the artist modifies, fragments and alienates pictograms, logos and other signs and components of advertising or visual communication. By doing so, the elements are morphing into abstract, yet strangely familiar forms. Neukamp not only creates new formal relationships, but also puts the motifs in paradoxical contexts and situations.

Biography

Anne Neukamp was born in Düsseldorf in 1976. She received her artistic training in Dresden, where she studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (HfbK). In 2015 she received the Pollock-Krasner Fellowship and a six-week residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York.

Anne Neukamp's visual language is composed of logos, emblems, icons, pictograms, and signs, but she fundamentally reinterprets them in her work. Her paintings create a state of suspension between comprehensible motifs and an abstract and loose pictorial cosmos that is situated between reality and illusion. Thus, Neukamp's paintings run counter to the viewer's ability to simply read and consume them.

The contemporary artist has had solo exhibitions at the Marlborough Contemporary Gallery, (New York), the Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery, the University of the Arts (Philadelphia), the Gregor Podnar Gallery (Berlin) or the Wilhelm Hack Museum (Ludwigshafen). Today Neukamp lives and works in Berlin.
